The National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS) is a welfare initiative under the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), aimed at providing financial support to families below the poverty line (BPL) upon the death of the primary breadwinner. This scheme is centrally sponsored by the Government of India and is implemented across all states and union territories.
Amount: A one-time lump sum of ₹20,000 is provided to the bereaved family.
To qualify for the NFBS, the following conditions must be met:
Family Status: The family must be recognized as Below Poverty Line (BPL).
Age of Deceased: The primary breadwinner must have been aged between 18 and 59 years at the time of death.
Cause of Death: The death can be due to natural causes or accidents.
Application Timeline: Applications must be submitted within two years from the date of death.
